Taiwan Strait Military Drill — Japan’s Contingency Planning Is No Longer Hypothetical

Chinese military exercises around Taiwan have shifted from occasional demonstrations to regularized pressure campaigns. For Japan, the shift from hypothetical to operational contingency planning reflects this change: the question is no longer whether Japan would face decisions if a Taiwan Strait crisis escalated, but what decisions it would face and on what timeline.

Japan’s defense planners are working through scenarios in which US forces operating from Japanese bases would be directly involved in a Taiwan contingency, making Japan a participant regardless of its formal policy position. The Okinawa base structure creates this exposure. Understanding it clearly is the precondition for managing it wisely.
